Understand the steps of a beauty routine to maximize results!
It’s easy to get lost among the thousands of products available on the market, which brings us so many questions: What’s a toner for? Should I apply my serum before or after my cream? Is sunscreen really necessary in winter? …
Let us introduce you to a simplified version of a skincare routine for the skin’s basic needs, without any ‘fluff’.
AM Daytime use / PM Evening use
Step 1 – Cleanser & Make-up Remover (AM/PM)
Cleansing is crucial for skin health. Also, if you wear makeup, make sure you choose a product that will remove makeup from your face as well as your eyes. This step is the most important in your beauty routine!
Tip: when using a foaming product, use lukewarm water to maintain the quality of your skin!
Step 2 – Tonic Lotion (AM/PM)
Place a few drops on a cotton pad and wipe all over your face to balance your skin’s pH and remove make-up and cleanser residues. It helps the following products of your beauty routine to penetrate better.
Tip: If you live in a dry area (wood-burning homes), transfer a moisturizing toner to a spray bottle to create a moisturizing mist and spray as often as necessary to compensate for the lack of humidity in the air.
Step 3 – Serum (AM/PM)
A serum is a concentrate of powerful ingredients to be applied under your cream to target a specific problem or need. It is never used alone.
Tip: Apply your serum immediately after your toner when it is still damp. It will be easier to spread and will trap water into the skin.
Step 4 – Face cream (AM/PM)
Your cream should target your needs and also have the right texture for your skin type. You should apply the product all over your face and neck, avoiding the eye area. This is a more delicate area and requires a more delicate product.
Tip: Your skincare routine should also be adapted to the season. In summer, we use lighter skincare products and in winter more moisturizing ones, always respecting your skin type.
Step 5 – Eye contour creams (AM/PM)
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face. That’s why you need a finer product to treat the area.
Tip: The area around the lips is also delicate. You can use your eye contour cream on this area if you notice signs of aging.
Step 6 – Sun protection (AM)
The sun is there even under storms and clouds, just as much as on sunny days! To avoid premature skin aging, apply a minimum of SPF 30 sun protection every day.
Tip: Re-application is important after 2 hours of cumulative exposure. Even if you’re wearing make-up, there are sunscreen powders or sprays for touch-ups.
Complementary Step – Exfoliation (PM)
It’s important to exfoliate 1x a week to dislodge dead skin cells, which sometimes create a barrier effect that can prevent the absorption of your products. This step is best performed on freshly cleansed skin.
Tip: When massaging your exfoliant, be gentle! You need to use gentle pressure, because strong pressure won’t be any more effective and you risk damaging your skin!
Complementary Step – Face mask (PM)
The mask is a complementary product to a well-established routine to ‘boost’ the skin. Often with a precise aim, the mask provides a solution to a specific need: dehydration, lack of radiance, excess sebum, etc.
Tip: Ideal to apply after your exfoliant for best results. Apply a serum under your mask for even more benefits.
How do I know my skin type?
How do I know if my products are right for me?
To answer these questions, you’ll need the assessment of a skin care professional. She’ll be able to analyze your skin and ask you the right questions to determine whether, for example, your current dehydration may be linked to a cleanser that’s not adapted to your skin type, a cream that’s not rich enough, over-exfoliation, and so on.
